"Mosel's Best Kept Secret" - Mosel Fine Wine"

It all started a few months before I left for France in February 2019 when my good friend, Stefan Steinmetz, emailed me and said he has a new superstar for me to sell. This is the man behind the famous 1994 Licht-Bergweiler Auslese that we sold full and half bottles of. When he speaks, one listens. I've continued to ask him for more 1994 Riesling as that is one of my favorite vintages of the 90s because of the acidity and the freshness. It is uncanny and I've had terrific luck with them.  Also old Mosel wine not named Prum or Schaefer is surprisingly affordable (if you can find it). Another side effect of producer fetishizing. If one fetishizes the top producers then everyone else below is fairly priced. Sure Prum and Schaefer are great but not leaving everyone else in the dust great. That's a fact. But, hey, if you only drink old Prum and Schaefer stop reading now, but if you want to experience old Mosel Riesling Porn please continue to read as I have one of the most profound old Mosel Riesling deals I've ever encountered. Two wines. Both 1994s and both ready to go but will last 15+ more years. These wines have unexpectedly fallen into my lap and I've never been more excited to share them all with you. They are profound wines and the prices are silly. Everyone needs to act super quickly as a few German wine retailers are also hot on the trail of these wines. So order as much as possible so I can turn these around quickly. Don't want to miss out. Me or you!

First a little history. My connection to these wines is a winemaker named Julian Ludes but these two
94s are made by his uncle Herman Ludes. One is from the village of Thornisch and one is from the village of Klüsserrath (these are 8-12 miles from Piesport in the direction of Trier). Both have insane levels of acidity are both made from very old vines. They are from vineyards that were very famous in the 40s to the 60s. These are vinous gems and the only reason you are able to buy these is because of my deep deep roots in Germany. I've been going to the Mosel every year since 2006. People know that I respect these winemakers and wines and also can move them to the right people which is all of you. You are the reason why people offer me wines like this.

First up is the 1994 Hermann Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch Spatlese for $31.99 a bottle on a 4-pack and $29.99 a bottle on a case. These are made from vines that are an average of 75 years old and the youngest are 50 and the oldest are 100.  This blew my mind. Next to 1990, 1994 is the best vintage of the 90s in the Mosel. It has freshness and acidity for days. This wine is stunning and will last 10-15 more years easily. It is a ridiculous bottle of Spatlese. I tasted it over three days and it got better and better. Starts off with a whiff of petrol, lemon candy and slate. As soon as you open it and smell it you can tell this has age on it but it does something that I can only describe as "youthening up" in that when it interacts with oxygen it gets younger and even more dynamic. There is Meyer lemon, herbs, apple skin and so much wonderful exquisite minerality and slate. Just stunning. The palate is just unreal. It is so so complex and balanced with candied fruit and all the 1994 acidity and freshness. Amazing elegance and juiciness with startling length. It is soso persistent. The length is what I like to call sneaky. You think it's over but it really is just beginning. Wow. Wow. This is stunning. The balance of sweetness and minerality is just awe inspiring. Only in the Mosel. It's so finesse-driven and as a friend of mine calls it, "this is Riesling Porn." Buy cases of this as this is a once in a lifetime offer.

It's grey and blue slate with 30% of the vines being "own-rooted." This is the Ludes main site and all the other growers in the village have very young vines that were only planted in 2016. Slopes are south facing and it's on the warm side of the slope but it has much more acid than similar site in the Middle Mosel. The vineyard is crazy stoney and has so many jagged unkempt stones. The old vines give this wine a character that you can't find in this village or most of the Mosel.

Next up is something even more exciting. At least I think so. The 1994 Hermann Ludes Klüsserather Bruderschaft Riesling Auslese. This is a Fass freak show if I have ever tasted one. This is going to be $39.99 on a 4-pack and $37.99 on a 12 bottle case. This is a frigging crazy ass wine. I love the name. Sounds like mid 90s German Progressive Rock. These are 100 year old own rooted vines. Yes you read that correctly. It's all grey slate and south facing. It's from one small parcel and it is a warm site that looks like an open amphitheater. Old school Auslese that could easily pass as Spatlese today. It immediately shows younger on the nose than the Spatlese. Super aromatic with lemon and so many layers of minerals. Unreal nose. So lemony and herbal but like high end Meyer lemon. Sick, sick nose. Mushroom, green, herbal, so good, mint, leather, smoke, raw shittake, porcini, hummus, mulchThe nose has so much depth you'll get lost in it. It keeps opening and revealing nuance after nuance. It's unreal. The palate is rich and oh so sexy. Elegant and mineral. Stunning purity. Complexity beyond what you could possible imagine. Impossible levels of complexity. It's more like a super Kabinett than an Auslese. Must weight was a different ballgame back in 1994. So so fine. So so long. It's endless, actually. The persistence is real. Balance of this wine is like Simone Biles on the balance beam doing an Olympic gold medal performance. So lemony and herbal on the finish. It has this sick texture. Rich but also 3-4-5 dimensional. This is Riesling Porn. Another once in a lifetime opportunity.
