Today's offer has been years and years in the making. The first ever wine that we offered by the famous "King of the Rhone" was the famous 2010 Compagnie l'Hermitage Cuvee Des Moines. This was when we first started with The Greek who owns the most famous wine store in the Northern Rhone and this wine was an insane value at $45 and we sold a ton and made many many people happy. George, aka the Greek was super happy that we called him "The King of the Rhone" as that's truly what he is. George knows everybody in the Rhone and especially the Northern Rhone. Everybody knows him. More by his moniker, The Greek, than by his name George Lelektsoglou. He's got personality for days and knows more about the Rhone than anyone I've ever met. That includes every single winemaker I've ever met in the Rhone. The respect is unreal and he is a living legend
Today I have a wine may represent the pinnacle of George's career. His greatest work. And this man Today I am honored, lucky and thrilled to be able to offer one of the rarest wines I've ever sold, the 2017 Georges Lelektsoglou Hermitage "Le Cerisaie" for $102.99 a bottle on a 3-pack. I tasted this back in February and didn't think George would let me have some. But guess he woke up on the right side of the bed and let me sell some to all of you. He knows it will go go to the right people. The wine is absolutely genius. Here's the vital stats and these are important has made a lot of great wines. Oh what? Yes George is also a master winemaker. He has his own micro cuvees. These are as rare as it gets in the N. Rhone and George does it all.
- It's from the climat Beaumes
- It's from 70 year old vines
- It's as old school as it gets with elevage only in demi-muid
- Only 720 bottles were produced. (60 cases)
- George chooses what producer he gets it from (no I'll never ever reveal it, so don't ask)
- George decides the vinification
- George decides how long the wine will be in barrel
- Georges picks out the plot
It's on the same level as Jean-Louis Chave's but it's a bit more authentic in my opinion and not as "made." The nose is just glorious. Sick. Ripe blackberry, raspberry in a thick coulis style. Huge raspberry, blackberry, cassis, leather, herbs, smoke, mesquite bbq, granite and mineral. Enormously complex nose but just a baby. In 5-6-7 years this will just be crazy. It's so impressive now but this is a wine to be aged so you can really be blown away. Tea leaves, black cherries. Huge granite. After air the blackberry, blueberry, herbs, lavender, granite are so so so aromatic. So vivid, wafting and detailed. Huge huge granite. It's so refined, classy and graceful. It's just pure beauty. George is not going to pick anything that does not meet his rigorous standards. I've tasted a lot of wine with this man. This is easily Chave level.
Palate is rich and ripe with stunning purity and density. Insanely concentrated but so elegant. with black fruits and velvety tannins. So opulent, with just massive power and depth. This is so grand in every way. Regal.
This is a great Hermitage.
Massive concentration and refinement with unreal freshness and such a super clean finish.
Amazing balance and purity. What a big boy. Velvet texture is to die for. Big tannins and serious structure but all in such divine balance. This is grand. This is epic. This is genius. It's so big and so refined and so so elegant. Wow. It's got soul, heart and is an emotional wine. It's an emotional experience as the King of the Rhone has put his stamp on a cuvee that is so uniquely his. It's tarry and sweet with massive tannins and epic structure. Sickness. Remarkable sweetness. Stunning tannnins. Sickness. Wow. So long. Long and long. Profound. This is a 30+ year wine and you should not drink it for 10. This is 100 points in my book when it reaches maturity in 10 years. Fun to drink now with a 3 hour decant.
Below is Jeb Dunnuck's Review of the 2018
"Coming from the limestone soils on the eastern part of the hill, the 2018 Hermitage La Cerisaie offers a rich, powerful style that carries plenty of blackcurrants, scorched earth, chocolate, and spice aromas and flavors. Rich, beautifully textured, with solid mid-palate depth, it has some upfront appeal, which is common in the vintage, yet will keep for 15+ years or more." 94-96 PTS, Jeb Dunnuck (2018)
Today I am privileged to sell the 2017 Compagnie l'Hermitage Crozes-Hermitage (Lelektsoglou) Vielles Vignes de Gervans for $49.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. The vines are very old (100 years plus) from an area called Gervans which is right behind Hermitage. The granite soils of Gervans are parralel to the great Hermitage Les Bessards. It's better than most Hermitage. The area is called "petit Hermitage" by the locals. It's 5-10 minute drive from Hermitage central. There is no oak on the wine (steel vats) and Georges selects and vinifies the wine his way. The vines and terroir are from a very famous winemaker which is all I can say. There are only 2,000 bottles produced and it has been on sale for 2 weeks and there are only 300 left. Then it's gone. This is from very old vines and from arguably the top sector of Crozes-Hermitage.
The nose is just insane. Huge and generous with deep berry/black cherry fruit and crushed deep granite. Gamey, feral, spicey, so comforting, gravy, pepper. White and black spice. So so complex. Olive. Huge granite. This is so deep, nuanced and very layered. Almost lurid. Dark flowers and mint. It's an amazing nose and transcends Crozes for how dark, serious and meaty it is. So complete. There is no way in hell anybody would ever guess Crozes blind. No way. It's too noble and has too much breeding. Really inky color only adds the allure.
The palate is so deep yet so harmonious. Blackberry, black cherry fruit on a bed of granite. Stunning inner mouth aromas and one of those finishes that begins when you think it's going to end. Juicy and sensual with a musky inner mouth perfume. Big black and blue fruits. Opulent and rich but also fresh and energetic. So sappy and juicy with incredible density and sweetness. Awesome texture as well. Huge mineral spine. Stunningly well made wine that is absolutely delicious. Just lingers on the palate. This is top, top class Crozes. More like a Hermitage. So long. Amazing freshness and a granite expression like no other. The balance is extraordinary as well as the level of concentrated dense fruit. This is what Crozes can and will be. Crozes is the new St. Joseph. With the right terroir, old vines and sparing no expense (that's why only 2,000 bottles made as only the best for this wine) you can make world class and age-worthy wine (15+ years) from Crozes-Hermitage. This is as expected very limited.
"The 2018 Crozes-Hermitage Vieilles Vignes De Gervans comes from some of the oldest vines in the Rhône Valley, grown on a steep, granite slope located just behind Hermitage Hill. This inky colored red offers a ripe, powerful, granite-laced style in its cassis and currant fruits as well as notes of scorched earth, graphite, and ground pepper. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and with plenty of tannins and granite character, it's going to needs2-4 years of bottle age." 91-93+ PTS, Jeb Dunnuck (2018)
