Picasso is, of course, one of the world's most famous painters. His work spans decades and
multiple styles, many of which he originated himself. What many people do not know is that he also made a comparatively small number of sculptures. Perhaps his most influential is Woman's Head (Fernande). Woman's Head is considered to be the first work of Cubist sculpture. Picasso also is considered the inventor of Assemblage, which is sort of a 3D painting that is a cross between painting and sculpture.
German Sparkling Wine
Germany is, of course, famous for sweet and dry Riesling and (on this list) Spatburgunder. Sparkling wine, not so much. There just isn’t much great German Sparkling wine and there is a sea of mediocre Sekt all over Germany. Heck, Henkel is a major brand that has some notoriety for being truly awful. Think the Whispering Angel of German Sekt. Truly great German Sparkling wine is as Unicorny as it gets.
The list of truly great ones is few and far between.
- Peter Lauer Late Disgorged Riesling Sekt
- Sekthaus Raumland Various cuvées
- A Few Bottlings from Georg Breuer
- Immich-Anker in the Mosel
I may be missing a few that I have not tried (Markus Molitor, Battenfeld Spanier, etc.) but you get the point.
But all that changes today at Fass Selections. Today we are dedicating a whole email to a truly great German Sparkling wine. This wine blew me away and the very stingy Mosel Fine Wines gave one vintage (2017) a 92 and today’s vintage (2018) a 91.
The Wine
The 2018 Marbleous Blanc de Noir Spätburgunder Brut Nature can be had for $36.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. This is a brilliant and extremely delicious wine. This is Champagne Method. It was aged for 1 year in barrel on the lees, before it went to bottle for the 2nd fermentation for 2 years. It is on 2-3g residual sugar and did not see any sulfur after it was disgorged. It is 100% Pinot Noir. What I love about this wine is how refined it is and fine the mousse is plus how finely beaded the bubbles are. It’s truly just a brilliant accomplishment and it’s got complexity but also it’s so utterly delicious that it’s hard to not drink an entire bottle once it’s open. Just incredible stuff.
Awesome nose here. Color is a light salmon and nose is diffused cherries. Some tree bark, some citrus and complex notes of smoke, white pepper and even some almond. Gorgeous, lithe and aromatic.
Palate is dry and almost austere but the perfect ripeness balances it all out. Juicy and clean. Sappy and complex. Gorgeous mousse. Really clean and really pure. Long. Good structure. Also toasty and briochey. This goes down too easy. As this opens the mousse gets so refined. This is quite something. One of the most elegant and delicious sparking wines I’ve ever had from Germany. Just brilliant. Below is the 91 point Mosel Fine Wine Review.
“The TF Brut Nature, as it is referred to on the central part of the label (the vintage and other information are provided in small print on the side of the label), was made with grapes picked in a prime south-facing and steep part of the Winninger Domgarten and was fermented without intervention. It was left on its lees after refermentation in the bottle for 24 months before being disgorged without dosage at the end of August 2021 (the disgorgement date is not provided on the label). This golden-bronzed colored sparkling wine offers an absolutely stunning and mature nose of herbs, spices, quince, quality street flavors, and herbal elements. It proves smooth and lifted up by its mousse and subtly oxidative flavors. The finish underlines the notes of salted caramel, citrus, herbs, and spices. This is not your fruity upfront Sekt, as it plays more on subtly oxidative notes often found in the finest Champagne. As such, it is truly amazing! 2022-2028” - 91 points Mosel Fine Wine
