Merry Christmas! It’s been quite a year and Fass Selections grew like it has never grown before
and we have you to thank for it. Through thick and thin you all stuck with us and I’ve never been happier to be a part of this business as I am today. Today is an email that I know you’ve been all been waiting for and that’s the Red Wine of The Year.
It was very hard trying to pick one out as while the wine media disinformation machine is blaring on about a Champagne shortage (Narrator: There isn’t one) there is actually a Burgundy shortage and it’s only going to get worse with the 2020 and especially the 2021 vintage. Even though 2019 was a short vintage there is more wine in 2019 than there is in 2020 and it’s by far the finest red Burgundy vintage since 2010 and perhaps 1999. Trying to nail down a 2019 Red Burgundy as Fass Selections’ Red Wine Of The Year has been a trial in itself. I wanted to find a 2019 Red Burgundy that checked the boxes below.
- It had to be a a 9.5 or above on Delectable.
- It had to be under $50 and ideally under $40
- It had to be from the 2019 vintage
- I needed to have enough for the whole list or most of the list
I think I definitely easily checked 3 of those boxes. 1, 2 and 3. We will see if I checked four but I don’t think 240 bottles is enough.
I’m happy to reveal the Fass Selections’ Red Wine Of The Year is the 2019 Domaine Michel Rebourgeon Beaune 1er Cru “Les Choucheax” for $41.99 a bottle on a 4-pack and $39.99 a bottle on a 12 bottle case. I slimmed my margins to get it for under $40 a bottle on case purchases. Let me make this very clear. You will never ever see a deal like this ever again and this might be the last great affordable elite Burgundy 1er Cru deal considering what’s going on with 2020 and 2021. This wine is insane. I was blown away by it. 19 is William’s breakout vintage and he really upped his game. The wines are so elegant now and finely knit. They are joyous, complex and have that classic, deep and hedonistic Rebourgeon fruit.
I always say if the Cote de Beaune had a great red wine vintage then all of Burgundy had a great red wine vintage. It’s just harder to make red wine in the Cote de Beaune than the Cotes de Nuits as Mother Nature usually save her wrath for the Cote de Beaune rather than the Cote de Nuits. When I opened the 2019 Domaine Michel Rebourgeon Beaune 1er Cru “Les Choucheax” I had none reserved as a few other vintages I tasted were fine but didn’t grab me. This grabbed me by the throat and announced, “I am here” from the first sniff and sip.
Smoking nose of bright tangy mid to late season red cherries. Ethereal, confectionary and gorgeous. Really bright and lifted. Expansive and deeply aromatic. Layered and full of nuance. Really terrific nose. 9.6. Just stunning. On day 2, Stunning nose. Cherries galore. Confectionary aromas and pulverized rock dust with a huge limestone imprint. So aromatic. Deep and delicate.

Palate is sweet, silky, gamey and just flat out gorgeous with a very expressive hit of delicate and elegant minerality. This is mindblowing. Did not expect this to be that great. Beautiful light and translucent color as well. Such fine tannins. Hint of licorice develops on the nose. Really wonderful sweetness but also terrific depth and such finesse. Usually Beaune is more large scaled and brawny but this one. Blind I’d say Volnay 1er Cru. Very impressive. It’s so sexy, so silky and so lacey. The texture is stunning as is the fruit sweetness. At $40 I’ve never sold a burgundy this haunting, ethereal and complex. Amazing purity and depth and just so seductive. It’s got that unreal Rebourgeon fruit but now it’s got finesse and complexity. This kids deserves an A-Rod contract. On day 2, palate is just awesome. Balanced, pure, sweet and linear. Not a hair out of place. Stunning. So fresh and spherical. Just delicious. This can be drunk now through 2037. But will be best in 3-4 years.
