A chef in a small town called Roses in Spain taught us that genius knows not of geography. That human talent is the scarcest and most valuable commodity on the planet. And that it must be revered and nurtured and that it will sustain and nurture us in return. Please forget that these wines are not of the Rheinhessen, Nahe or the Mosel. Please remember that great winemakers make great wines.
I was hanging out the other night with a friend and client and was asking him about the wines he had and liked from Fass Selections. This guy has a serious palate and knows wine. So I was curious what he thought of what he had. Of all the things he had, he said the Paul Weltner Riesling Hohleite GG was maybe the best Riesling he has ever drunk. This was the 2013 vintage and it is seriously one of the best Rieslings not only he has ever had but I have ever had. I've had a lot of Riesling. Paul Weltner e-mails are the easiest for me to write as my thoughts come from a place of deep emotion. The wines are emotional experiences. They are dramatic, intense, baroque and just thrilling examples of their type. He not only makes world beating Riesling he makes, what for me, is the best Sylvaner in the world. Today I bring you Paul's top wines; his two 2015 GG's. I sell these early as I am competing against the German market where Paul is an established superstar and these sell out quickly over there.
2015 is a stunning vintage for Paul. I tasted the 14's and the 15's side by side a few days ago and while the 14's are a better drink today, the 15's are better wines. Much better. They are as profound as any German wines I've had. They will need a few years to come into their own but oh man, there aregrand slam home runs in the bottom of the 9th in the World Series for sure. Paul's wines are already opulent but these up the ante. Oh man do they. They are endless wines. They are rich as all can be but have the trademark acidity that Weltner is known for. I cannot recommend these enough and in the German wine sweepstakes these are the best value sleepers in all of Germany. Blow away your German wine friends by brown bagging these and make tons of new friends as well along the way.
First up is his signature wine, the 2015 Paul Weltner Hohleite Silvaner Grosses Gewachs, for as little as $45.99 a 3-pack. Words are going to be hard for me to come by when describing this wine so bear with me. Big, ripe and giving nose. So much going on. Uber complex. Sweet greens, herbs and huge minerals. Stunning palate and more open and giving at this stage than '12 '13 '14.Elegant and stunningly complex. Sappy and mineral, with huge palate staining complexity.Amazing length. Just so complete. Ripest vintage yet but backed up my serious minerals and acids.Stunning concentration and a huge wave of flavor. There is nothing like this wine. It is the best Silvaner in the world, and if there is one better, let me know and I'll taste it.
Next up the the biggest sleeper Riesling GG in the world, the 2015 Paul Weltner Hohleite Riesling Grosses Gewachs for as little as $45.99 on a 3-pack. Huge sexy nose. Jumps out. Deep, complex and so intense. Mineral, green apple skins and lanolin. Mineral and elegant with such purity and richness yet slathered in minerals. The nose is the star now but the palate is stunning but obviously needs a few years. So sappy and mineral grippy with such elegance. How can this wine be an underrated sleeper? Well the Weltner Silvaners are, in the opinion of many, so clearly the best in the world and really benchmark wines for the grape that the Rieslings (merely top 10-15 for dry riesling) just get less attention. The wines are just as good - it's not like Paul slacks off when he makes them. They are also equally distinctive and reflections of both Paul's terroir and his own unqiue style. So for all of the Weltner Silvaner-heads out there, I strongly suggest that you try some rieslings as well.
Paul is an enormous talent and his wines are so special. They can be uttered in the same sentence as the greats of Germany. For Franken, Paul is far and away the best white wine producer and really has no peers qualitatively. There are nice white wines and there are very nice white wines to come out of Franken, but nothing as mind numbingly awesomely insane as Paul's. They are the definition of intensity. The mineral force and layers of mineral depth and precision will while being gentle and elegant are something very few wines can do. And this is dry. In Franken GG is less than 4 grams per liter of sugar and usually Paul measures his RS in .5 .7 levels. These are dry, dramatic, big, bold, super complex, finely mineral and filigreed wines from incredible sites.
There is nothing like these wines in the world.
