Future Price Hike Warning:
Before I get into the wines, there is some news that DRC has leased vineyards in Corton
Charlemagne from Bonneau du Martray. For me, as a wine importer this means one thing. Corton Charlemagne is going up in price. Corton Charlemagne made by DRC will be the most expensive Corton Charlemagne on the Market which will increase prices for other producers (the Halo Effect). Today is a chance to buy the wines before the DRC price spike.
These are "value" wines, not because you can eat them with pizza or serve them at a party but because they are incredibly underpriced given the quality and terroir.
Up first is my favorite wine to drink from Remy young. The 2016 Remi Poisot Corton Bressandes from 40-50 year old vines can be had for as little as $89.99 on a 3-pack. Even in Remi's super cold cellar in early February it showed brilliantly. Every bottle I've opened up stateside I always think is going to be insanely closed, and it sings and soars like the Grand Cru it is. That's Bressandes for ya. Gloriously open nose with superb depth of aroma. Just a gorgeous nose. Red fruits, spice, earthy and so much depth and nuance. Deep, sweet and sappy fruit on the palate and texture for days. The Pinot Noir trifecta. The nose has a mineral underpinning with insanely sweet ripe and dark cherry fruit. Incredible freshness and purity. Crunchy palate and great cut and precise like the finest diamond in the world. Insane inner mouth aromas. Sweeter and more prevalent than in the 2015. The complexity is incredible. Gorgeous purity and unending length. More concentrated than the 15 and so deep. Ripe tannins of very high quality. Very pure and feminine. Like Chambolle-Musigny meets Corton. So sweet, so fine so so elegant. Remi really got astonishing freshness in his 16s. I am lucky I have these wines. Bressandes is the most feminine of the Corton GCs and has such "sweet" fruit. I think the sweetest of any Corton GC in my experience. This is a very wow wine and a reason we drink Burgundy. Here is Burghound's note for the 2015 which couldn't be more different than the 2016.
"This is also mildly reduced though in this case it appears reasonably clear that the underlying fruit is quite ripe. There is both more volume and a finer mouth feel to the sleekly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a firm, highly complex and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is markedly firmer and will require at least some patience." - 91-93 pts, Burghound, 2015 Vintage
Next up is the 2016 Remi Poisot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru for $119.99 a bottle on a 3-pack. This is year in and year out one of the best wines I import. There is something special about drinking Corton Charlemagne. It's so regal and distinctive and unlike any Chardonnay in in the world. It also happens to be my favorite white Grand Cru. There are more expensive ones and more regal ones but for me Corton Charlemagne scratches that itch more than a Batard or Chevalier. These are vineyards that his family gave him, so this is about as good Corton Charlemagne terroir as there is. The 16 continues the streak of brilliant CC's from Remi. The nose is elegant and ripe with classic aromas of hazelnut, ripe green apples, aged Gouda, iodine, huge minerals and grilled nuts. It is very aromatically complex and expressive. Such a deep nose that keeps changing. One of the best noses of 2016. Stunning. I cannot imagine how great this will smell with 4-5 years in the cellar. Or 10. The palate is rocking and already very open for a young Poisot CC. Insane acidity and freshness. So intense and deep. Structured, so pure, so sappy, beautiful ripeness while still showing some amazing tension and never ending length. It has top and I mean TOP 1% finesse. To have this much material and be this elegant is why this wine is Grand Cru. The texture is as sexy as you can imagine and the tension is first class. The wine really delivers an incredible finish that has to be tasted to be believed. This is a masterpiece that is not to be missed. This will be allocated. This needs 3-4 years to show well and then can last 10-15 years.
