Back to the Future
Many of us have wisely stocked up on the wines of Sara Vezza. She is one of the top young stars of the Langhe and makes strikingly elegant wines. Because of the vintage characer (balanced fruit) the 2014s are today drinking like what her wines will all ultimately be. This is a rare chance to try a vintage that is now being recognized as a classic vintage in the Langhe. T
This is her best wine and these are almost sold out at the estate. She made fewer than 1,000 bottles.
2014 - Told Ya So!
I was reading an article in Vinous about 2016 Barolo and Antonio Galloni was naming great vintages in
Piedmont over the last ten years and besides 2016, 2013 and 2010 he mentioned 2014. That moment for me was the end point of a small battle we have waged since the 14s came out. We both love 2014 Barolo/Barbaresco. Just adore it and as I've tasted it since it's been released it's gotten better and better. They are going to age so well. This is a throwback vintage. It's got high acid, angles and corners but in precise architectural way. But it's got beautiful just ripe fruit. It's maybe my favorite type of fruit. It's not lush and ripe/too ripe like 15 is. 16 is ripe but not like 15, it's perfect mid season ripeness. 13 maybe goes farther than 16 in ripeness but has better balance than 15 plus freshness. 14 has fruit that's been picked at the perfect time but no one would mistake it for a 15/16/13 or even 2010 which is harmonious and and compact. 14's stick out like a sore thumb. They have that just perfectly ripe fruit that will never be mistaken for too ripe. It's crystalline in nature. These 14s, when at their best are wines that are cut from a diamond. Precise and pure. Today's wine is the best 2014 Barolo I've had.

The Vezza Style
Now combine the character of the 2014 vintage in Barolo and the style of the great Sara Vezza at Josetta Saffirio. You get velvet diamonds. Sara's wines have a softness to them that makes her style the ideal style to balance out the 2014 diamond like edges and she does in a way that is absolutely brilliant. Today's wine is only made in the top vintages as Sara deems and is the current release of their most high end and most rarest Barolo.
The 2014 Josetta Saffirio Barolo Milonovociento 48 Riserva can be had today for $69.99 a bottle on a 3-pack. It is the best 2014 I've had and I love 2014. I gave it a 9.7 and gave the 2016 Sara Bezza Barolo Ravera a 9.8. This is super elite territory here. It's one of the finest Barolos we have ever sold and $70 a bottle is a steal. This wine will age so well over the next 10-15-20 years it is assured. It's a masterpiece. Here is my note.
Now we are talking. I love elite 14s and this is as elite as it gets. The top wine from Sara Vezza at Saffirio. From 1948 Rupestris vines.
The nose is divine. Just divine. Soft and spellbinding. Mulchy and incense-like. Amazing detail and clarity. The most vivid cherries one can imagine. Perfectly and juuuust ripe mid season red cherries. Expansive. Fresh wood shavings in a wood shop. Gorgeous. Under that is a profound minerality. Boy is this layered. Also smoke. Also mesquite. Complex, layered and lively. Perfumed like no other Barolo. The perfumes on the Sara Vezza wines are incomparable. That is her signature. The soil signature aromas as well are crazy on this. The fresh, perfect wet earth is so clear. The nose is so good here after some air. Just more and more expansive. Spice and mint. Balance is spectacular.
It is the height of elegance on the palate. Masterful. Unreal fruit sweetness. Wow. Like an elite Burgundy in that aspect. Awesome texture and has the X-ray clarity and tension of 14. Awesome acidity with insane freshness and so so nervy. I adore the character of this vintage. It's a high acid, super aromatic and structured old school vintage. A modern day 1988. Amazingly juicy and the elite, profound fruit sweetness with all the acid and structure is so compelling. Needs some age but within 3 years it should get to the next level and my score could go higher. This has the potential to be perfect.
24 HOUR UPDATE - Palate is so deep, so concentrated, so gripping and structured that this is truly an epic wine. Wowza. Violets galore. Roses. Fresh. So good. Huge mineral undertones. Also wonderful earthen scents. Palate is so deep, so concentrated, so gripping and structured that this is truly an epic wine. Just incredible depth here and sweetness of fruit. Endless midpalate. Wow. What a finish. I can't recommend this wine enough.
