The twice annual sale is in full bloom and I'm swamped so I'll be brief.
- Sebastien Dampt has been one of our most popular producers since month one.
- His wines are remarkably consistent.
- They are getting better as he is ageing them longer.
- One of these wines has 92 points from Burghound and the other has 89 and a "best value" designation.
- These are good enough to linger over but they are so affordable you can pop and pour them any time you want.
The Wines
I am thrilled to offer our 9th vintage of the classic 2019 Sebastien Dampt 1er Cru Cote de Lechet for $31.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. Man is this a smoking vintage of Lechet.
The nose is classic Lechet aromas of mineral, seashells and lemon zest, lime pith and hint of smoke with terrific complexity. But man does this bring the OYSTER! Maybe like the brine of some powerful east coast oyster like from Prince Edward Island. It's oyster central always in this Lechet. But also deep apple and pear fruit.
The palate is just nuts and glimmering and shimmering with energy, some tart, juicy, opulent fruit and oyster brine that is rendered so so pure. Really incredible and powerful lemon, lime and apple fruits with pith and purity that just intertwine with the classic and powerful seashell minerality. It's very, very dense and there is awesome material. Sebastien has improved so much and the extra elevage (4-5 extra months) has made these wines better and deeper than they have ever been. Incredible concentration and one of the the deepest Lechets I've ever had. Huge palate impact here. Super juicy and awesomely intense. Really intense. If you leave it in your mouth, it almost feels like its alive and almost pushing at the corners of your mouth trying to escape. This will age wonderfully. Old timers say 2019 is a clone of 1982 or maybe 2012 and I've been lucky to have an 1982 Lechet at Dampt and wow it was insane. You can feel the additional depth in the wine trying just screaming its presence. Great freshness from huge minerals and some decent acid. Not 2014 more like 2012 acids. The palate tingles and pumps juicy seashell complexity with a refined delivery. Really elegant. Lemon lime seashell saline finish that keeps on going. Just the best part of the oyster juice from the best oyster of the dozen. Oh man I can taste it now. It's young. That is for sure. Totally awesome Lechet. I see this aging very well. Inquire about case prices. Some of the vines from this bottling were planted in 1937! It was bottled in March of 2020. That is very late. Longest elevage ever for this wine. BH gave the 2019 a 92.
92 POINTS BURGHOUND (2019)
"A markedly ripe but not really exotic nose speaks of citrus confit, white flower and spiced apple. The tightly wound, racy and overtly mineral-driven flavors display good mid-palate sap that helps to buffer the slightly firmer lemon-tinged acidity shaping the lingering and well-balanced finale. Lovely. " - 92 Points, Burghound
Up next is one of the more absurd values that we sell and this is strictly because of the direct to consumer model. The 2019 Sebastien Dampt Chablis AC for $22.99 a bottle on a 4-pack is an insane mega deal. This wine us special and worth seeking out as 89 Point Burghound scores for $23 dollar Chablis is just an insane QPR. This is above the 2 Petit Chablis we have sold and has more power, depth and concentration but also more finesse and intense seashell minerality. This is Dampt's business card and in 2019 it might be his best vintage yet. I only sell this wine in exceptional vintages. This is only second time I've sold it since we opened. Last was 2012 vintage. This is so classic in 2019 and combines intense citrus of all types. This is just a brilliant wine for the genre. In top vintages this is a wine to buy by the case. It's so classic. Nose of minerals and flowers with nice lime zest and some appley fruit. But it's main aromatic component is that unique Chablis minerality that we all love. It has wonderful intensity and texture to it with lovely purity and Kimmeridgian freshness. Salty and just so so drinkable. Pound a case while you wait for the other 1er Cru's to mature
89 POINTS BURGHOUND (2019)
"(from vines in Milly). A classic Chablis l features notes of sea breeze, shellfish and algae that add interests to the intensely citrusy nose. There is good if not special volume to the vibrant and attractively textured flavors that brim with minerality on the clean and agreeably dry but not really austere finale. This is worth checking out." 89 Points, Burghound
