Plato and Aristotle, Ziereisen and Geitlinger
As students of philosophy know, Plato is perhaps the most important figure in Western philosophy. Plato's works have survived intact for 2,400 years largely because they have been studied continuously for 2,400 years. His most famous student is, of course Aristotle. Aristotle was obviously heavily influenced by Plato but branched out into physics, astronomy, biology and psychology. The student learned from the master but ultimately made significant contributions in new fields.
Much is the same in the relationship between Ziereisen and his protege Geitlinger. Max has certainly inherited from Hanspeter an elite understanding of how to work the vineyards to achieve perfectly ripe yet balanced fruit. He has learned his organizational skills and has his work ethic. But, as we will see today, he is not content to be Ziereisen II. He is branching out beyond even the rather broad offer set of his mentor.
Max has his own voice. Unlike any other voice in Germany as I've gotten to know the wines. They are elegant, complex and always always delicious. I've gotten incredible feedback from long time wine drinkers who are blown away. That's because even if you're a long time wine drinker Max offer's something new.
Today I've got two wines of Max's and because of the quirks of working with small production winemakers nobody else would bring in (especially from Germany) one I have less of than the other. I'm not gonna lie both of them are stunning and terrific values. Even with the tariffs.
Wine #1
First up is allocated. And it's Net pricing. I'm not gonna lie either. It's the best German roseI've had that's not Enderle & Moll. The 2018 Max Geitlinger "Rosie" for $26.99 NET is just an amazing bottle of Rose that also is ridiculously delicious. It's made from extra picked grapes Max tells me. It's mostly Pinot Noir but there is also a little Merlot. Yes that's right which is likely what makes this devastatingly delicious. 3 day extraction. Then 12 months in old 500 liter oak barrel. The wine is stunning. LOOK at that color. It's also so different, unique and delicious as the smell of limestone is unreal.
Fresh nose of watermelon, cherry, citrus skin, spice and just so many layers. Insane flowers and just so so good. Wow. Truly a wow nose. On day 2 the nose has lanolin, flowers and minerals. Big deep nose. Clean and screams quaff me.
Palate is so elegant, juicy and sweet. Amazing purity and freshness. Incredibly vivid fruit and so utterly drinkable and delicious. This wine is a problem it's so good. Amazing detail to the palate and superb balance. Really great. Smells like the Spätburgunder bottling diffused. Which is for me the best type of Rose. On day 2, palate is fresh and energetic, with great texture and purity. So clean. So drinkable. So juicy. So delicious. I don't claim many roses are special but this is a special rose.
"The crimson-colored 2018 Rosé trocken Rosie is bright, pure, fresh and delicate yet also intense on the aromatic yet vinous nose that offers red fruit along with floral and spicy aromas. Dry and vinous on the palate, this is an intense and even rich rosé with ripe and elegant acidity intertwined with finely grippy tannins and a refreshing red cherry taste on the finish. The rosé is made from 100% Pinot Noir whose grapes were macerated for four days (including a part of the bleeding mash of the red), and the wine was aged in 500-liter barrels for 12 months. Bottled with 12.5% alcohol. 600 bottles made. Tasted from lot L 202005 in July 2020." - 91 Points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate
Wine #2
One of Max Geitlinger's specialties is Regent and Regent blends.
What is Regent?
It is a hybrid that was created in Germany in 1967. It's a cross between Silvaner x Muller-Thurgau and Chambourcin. It only started being cultivated in Germany in 1996. It is fungus resistant and I can see it growing in popularity over the next decades. It creates dark wine with good acidity and flavors of
blackberries and black cherries. It's got terrific tannic structure as well. It reminds me of a refined version of Montepulciano.

Max makes a pure one which sells out instantly in Germany and a blended one with Pinot Noir. Today I have the blended version. The 2017 Max Geitlinger Wein Rotwild can be had for $35.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. This is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Regent.
What a nose. Dark berry fruit. Spice. Hint of moss. Crazy aromas. Deep. But also hard to identify. Thanks, Regent! Huge, expansive nose after air. Like wow. Earthy. Giant berry fruit. Mostly black. Pastille. Huge perfume. Not subtle but awesome. Cherry cough syrup. This is wild. Like the name says.
Palate is insanely juicy, pure and clean. Thunderous freshness and wow that purity. The palate is so bright and has insane lift to it plus just superb balance. What a wine. So so stunning. Ripe, velvety and substantial tannins and terrific length. This is truly great. Plum. Dark berries. Hint of spicy oak and finishes with insane spice. Gorgeous wine. After air it levels up. Palate is dynamite. Explosive red fruits and just awesome freshness. So pure and insane acidity matched with dark, rich blackberry fruit. Sappy and fresh. Wonderful minerality. So so long. Pure and balanced. Fantastic.
