The Unusual Stardom of Julien Cruchandeua's Aligotes
Julien Cruchandeau makes some of the best Aligote's in France. Yet when we first tried to sell them, we met with the usual resistance. To be honest, I had to almost force them on some customers to get them to try them.
These wines combine the brilliant minerality and acidity of Aligote with wonderful richness which makes them an absolute pleasure to drink. They are a great change of pace for Burgundy lovers and go incredibly well with food.
Of course, everyone loved them and demand increased. And now, they are allocated.
As Vonnegut would say, "So it goes."
The Wines
The 2020 Julien Cruchandeau Bouzeron Massale can be had today for as little as $24.99 NET. It follow in the footsteps of the terrific 2019 with its incredible laser-focused acidity and beautiful pure tart lime-lemon fruit. But it also has wonderful body, a hint of opulence and insane freshness on the finish. Terrific length and purity. The nose has the classic Aligote notes of minerals on top of lime skins and some seashell aromas. 10% is in barrel which gives this a touch of roundness, with 90% being
in stainless steel. This is not your father's screechy joyless Aligote. The combination of the terroir and Julien's magic touch gives this wine delicious fruit that goes remarkably well with its minerality and acidic backbone. Think really good 1er Cru Chablis. Fresh with and wonderful acidity. Yummy. Lemon/lime fruit and accented with superb minerality. Very complex and a lot of wine for the money. This also ages very well. I had the 2004 in the cellar in March a few years ago and it was terrific. You should have a bottle or 2 in your cellar. Trust me, one day you'll want a white to drink other than Chard, Riesling, Marsanne and Chenin and you'll be thrilled that you bought this.
Up next is the 2020 Julien Cruchandeau Bourgogne Aligote "Champ de Chene" for $22.99 NET. I only have 36 bottles of this and this is the first year I have ever gotten some, having never tasted it. I can only assume this is delicious as all Aligote Julien makes is masterful. It's priced lower than the Bouzeron so I can only assume this is from near Julien and not from Bouzeron.
Up next is another steal and another wine I have not tasted. There is so little precious wine In Burgundy that some wines I will not get samples of. This is the 2020 Julien Cruchandeau Beaune "Les Bons Feuvres" for $33.99 NET. Below is what Julien says about it.
"Regarding Beaune « Les Bons Feuvres » is juste near Pommard Limit. We find a little the style of the wines of Pommard by a beautiful tannic material but with a great Freshness more typical of the wines of the appellation Beaune. Regarding vinifacation 50% of full clusters that gives it a very air and fresh side." - Julien Cruchandeau
