The Time Machine

Most of you are no doubt familiar with H.G. Wells 1895 classic, The Time Machine. It was far ahead of its time and popularized the concept of time travel. It offers a bleak view of the future of earth as experienced by the scientist who invented the time machine.

As we sit here on the precipice of the Great Burgundy Shortage of 2023, I know what is going to happen, even if I don't have a time machine. We are going to be massively short of 2021
Burgundies and everyone is going to be short of Burgundy. It's not going to be quite as bad as the Morlocks eating the Eloi, but it still won't be a ton of fun.

This is why I’m aggressively selling 17 Red Burgundies as a part of the Fass Ninja Burgundy Cellar Raider Program. I'm cleaning out the cellars before the impending shortage. It’s a brilliant vintage and it’s never ever shut down. The wines are forward and lesser 1er Cru’s are in the zone right now. 18s are beasts that are settling into themselves gradually but ideally will need 5-10 more years in the cellar. But 17 is so good now. And believe me you’ll need 17s as 18s and 19s need age. 19s, while having unreal fruit they will need some time for site transparency to develop.

Today I’ve got two brilliant 1er Cru’s from the kid. Both are absurdly priced and both are providing amazing, upfront and pleasurable drinking right now and will continue to for a decade at least.

The Wines

Up first is the 2017 Domaine Rebourgeon Beaune 1er Cru “Les Choucheax” for $41.99 a bottle on a 4-pack and $39.99 on a case. This is very similar to the 19, if less ethereal and concentrated.

Smoking nose of bright, tangy mid season red cherriesEthereal, complex and gorgeous. Really bright, aromatic and lifted. So expansive and wide. Layered and full of nuance. Really terrific nose. 9.5. Just stunning. On day 2, Stunning nose. Cherries galore. Confectionary aromas and pulverized rock dust with a huge limestone imprint. So aromatic. Deep and delicate. Hint of licorice develops on the nose.

Palate is sweet, velvety, meaty and just flat out gorgeous with a very expressive hit of delicate and elegant minerality. This is so delicious.. Did not expect this to be that great as sometimes Beaune wines can underwhelm. Very and translucent color as well like Truchot. Such fine, pearly tannins. Really wonderful sweetness but also terrific depth and such finesse. Usually Beaune is more large scaled and brawny but this one. Blind I’d say Volnay 1er Cru. Very impressive. It’s so sexy, so silky and so lacey. The texture is velvety as is the fruit sweetness which is wrapped in the velvet. At $40 I’ve never sold a burgundy this haunting, ethereal and complex. Well the 19 in December. Amazing purity and depth and just so seductive. It’s got that generous Rebourgeon fruit but it’s also got finesse and complexity. This kids deserves an A-Rod contract. On day 2, palate is just awesome. Balanced, pure, sweet and linear. Not a hair out of place. Stunning. So fresh and spherical. Just delicious. This can be drunk now through 2032. But will be best in 3-4 years.

Up next is the 2017 Domaine Rebourgeon Volnay 1er Cru “Carelle sous Chapelle” for $45.99 a bottle on a 4-pack.

I have only 72 bottles but man is this a beauty. This is the most delicate and lithe Volnay 1er cru and this version tastes like heaven and has an ethereal gossamer-like texture. It’s directly below the great 1er Cru “Bousse d’Or” and can be drunk down with aplomb now but ideally will be best in 4-5 years when it will get secondary aromas eet. This is a very good Volnay as I’ve had in 2017 from William (better than Brouillard) and is easily the best Volnay William made in 2017.

Haunting, aromatic nose of minerals, pulverized rock dust, dark red cherries that are so elegant and so refined you’d think you’re drinking Lafarge. Amazing scent of the best bubblegum ever but so subtle and refined. Confectionery but showing ultimate restraint. Beautiful. A work of aromatic art. On day 2 it got better. Hugely mineral nose and just stunning depth. So stoney. Black cherry and such depth. Wow this is super precise and so pretty.

Wow is that palate just a finessed masterpiece of balance and drop dead purity. Wow is this a heavenly bottle of Volnay. It’s so fine, so delicate and so refined. This is liquid silk. Cherries galore but the restraint here for how awesome and perfect this is is what keeps one coming back. An absolute masterpiece. On day 2, sappy black and red cherry fruit. Fresh and elegant. Startlingly pure and fresh. Terrific inner mouth aromas. Unreal sweetness and balance. A knockout. Just genius.
