Chavy Chouet - The Evolution to Greatness
Now that Chavy Chouet is firmly entrenched in the elite of white Burgundy producers his wines are 100% allocated. 2020 and 2019 were allocated and god knows what will happen in 2021 where it is the smallest vintage since 1981. It’s remarkable to see how far Romaric has come from when I first started working with him. That was the 2013 vintage. Quality is up. Prices are up and quantiles are down. But Romaric still is a man of the people and his two BourgogneBlancs are some of the best values I sell.
His Bourgogne Blancs
I sold these occasionally in the past. They were delicious and in good years interesting. But as Chavy's style has evolved, I now love them. They have become leaner and more precise and a beautiful window into the wonders of the greatness of Burgundian terroir. They are now among the affordable wines that I'm proudest to be selling.
One is from Puligny and the other is from Meursault. They are doozies in 2020 and I’ll offer case pricing. His Bourgognes always have been very good but since 19 they have gone from very good to elite. You get the salinity, minerality and depth of his village wines and 1er Crus if not the length. Both of these are the best they have ever been in 2020 and yes these are also allocated. They have minimal new wood and are exactly what they should be and more. One wine got a 90 from Neal Martin of Vinous and the other got an 89 from Neal Martin of Vinous. Please don’t buy just the 90 point wine. 89 point wines are some of my most memorable wine experiences. And the Meursault version is totally different from the Puligny one (it tasts like Meursault).
The Wines
Up first I have a stunning bottle of Bourgogne Blanc. The 2020 Chavy Chouet Bourgogne Blanc "Les Femelottes" for $26.99 a 4 Pack and special case price of $24.99. I don't sell many Bourgogne Blancs but when I do, long time list members know to pay attention. I've sold Brisset/Janotsbos and of course the cult favorite Berlancourt. This is a chance to get the next big thing in white Burgundy for under $30, So I am offering case pricing because of the great value. It's that terrific. It's actually in Puligny-Montrachet and is just declassified. It lies below some top notch Puligny village land as indicated on the map Romaric sent me.
The nose is just stunning for this price level. Terrific floral notes and wonderful gout de terroir as they say. Hazelnut, almond, citrus, iodine and green apple surrounded by earthy, wet dripping minerality. Stunning purity to the aromas. Blind it's like a Puligny village.
Palate is electric with great acids and penetrating minerality and sap. Vibrant and very concentrated. So dense for a BB but wonderfully well made, elegant and long. Powerful, salty and very long finish with terrific structure suggests short term aging. This is not to be missed.
Truly incredible BB and it's basically Chavy Chouet Puligny At 1/3rd of the price. Buy cases. Below is the 90 Point VINOUS score for the 2020. 90 for a Bourgogne Blanc from Neal Martin is significant as he is a very stingy critic.
“The 2020 Bourgogne Blanc Les Femelottes has a light, fragrant nose with yellow plum and citrus peel. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, the 10% new oak lending a very subtle creaminess towards the finish. Everything you want from a Bourgogne Blanc...and a bit more.”- 90 points, Neal Martin, Vinous.
Now from Puligny we move to Meursault for the 2020 Chavy-Chouet Bourgogne Blanc “Les Saussots” for $26.99 a bottle on a 4-pack and $24.99 on a 12 bottle case. This is from Meursault vineyards and is basically a declassified Meursault.
Nose is very nutty and has lovey accents of spicy wood and huge florals. Ebullient and complex. But it gets going after 45 minutes of air. Super mineral and super expressive nose that is so nutty and appealingly salty. It's buttery an utterly classic Meursault, I mean Bourgogne Blanc from Meursault but what I love is the depth, the salt, the big almonds and grilled bread aromas.
The palate has terrific complexity, with just terrific palate energy. It toes the line between finesse and power so deftly. It is concentrated and has a serious core of big, rich, buttery apple and pear fruit but also a persistent chewy minerality. It's got a pillowy texture and an opulence to it that is kept nicely in check by all the freshness from the minerals and acid. It is amazingly pure and just gorgeous, balanced and complete. This is a stunning wine. Below is the 89 point Neal Martin score.
"The 2020 Bourgogne Les Saussots has a well-defined bouquet with apple blossom and light limestone aromas. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, plenty of energy and poise with a citrus-fresh, lime-tinged finish. Another excellent Bourgogne Blanc." - 89 points, Neal Martin, Vinous.
