The Cycle Is Complete!

Well, longtime Chavy-Chouet fans, the cycle is now complete.

1) We sold the wines for crazy low prices when Romaric was a incredibly good young producer (the Clos
des Corvees was $42.99 when we first sold it).

2) Romaric improved from incredibly good to elite.

3) We sold more at slightly higher prices.

4) And now he's gotten the elite scores from the highly respected Neal Martin.

These are not the same crazy low prices that we sold these for originally .

 - But they are still great values for high end White Burgundy. Bottom basement Case Tettes goes for around $60 and very good ones go for $100+. Chavy's versions are obviously much better than very good.

The 2020 Vintage

Even by Romaric's chill standards (the guy is super cool and super chill) he was so exited about the 2020 vintage he actually used an explanation mark when he first mentioned that he might have something special last December. More incisive, fresh and linear than 2019. Much smaller production. Due to the smaller crop there is more intensity and concentration than in 2020, but with the same energy and crispness. The wines could absorb more oak as well because of this. It is a prodigious vintage.

The Wines

The 2020 Chavy Chouet Meursault "Clos des Corvees Le Citeaux" which can be had for as little as $69.99 a bottle on a 3-pack is an outrageous deal for the dictionary definition of what a Meursault should be. This wine is so classically Meursault it seems it should be drunk in Flaubert's France in a way.

Grilled nuts, smokey minerals, some green apple on the gorgeous nose. Just a gorgeous nose of classic Meursault aromas but more on the candied rocks and mineral side with less butter and nuts. After some air, very floral with lovely hint of spice and so pure. Like a stream of Meursault.  Just like '18 but more intense. You can't get a more classic Meursault if you try.

The palate has terrific concentration and power. So much sap.  Stunning richness and purity on the palate. Just explosive with amazing freshness and tension. So long. This had similar energy to the '19 but seemed more complex, much deeper and more complete. Really really pure. Saying it over and over but the purity of Romaric's 20 whites is jaw dropping. The aromas in 20 are great. Just like the 14 which I'm sure you are regretting you did not buy more! There is a wealth of fruit, more grilled nuts on the palate and astounding length for a lie dit village wine. The palate impact can be summarized in two words. Opulent tension. This is easily 1er Cru in quality.  Insanely complex and rocking intense "I can't believe how concentrated it is" concentration. So deep. There is an epic Icelandic Viking take quality to this wine. Below is the 92 point Neal Martin Vinous score.

"The 2020 Meursault Clos des Corvées de Citeau, the monopole of the Domaine, has a very well-defined, you might say Roulot-like bouquet, with yellow plum, quince and light orange pith scents, an underlying stony scent becoming more accentuated with time. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a slightly waxy-textured finish, a little more extract here. Excellent."- 92 Points. Vinous, Neal Martin

The vineyard is one of the earliest ripening plots in Meursault and it can get hot on a lazy mid summer day. The soil is rich in clay and that is why it makes rich, opulent and luscious wines. It's a bonus that it's made by one of the most up and coming winemakers in all of the Cote de Beaune. I mean, I think he arrived as soon as I tasted the first wine. He did. Every wine I've ever had has been magic and more. I'm lucky to have him.

Up next I have the 2020 Chavy-Chouet Meursault "Les Case-Tettes" for $69.99 each on a 3-pack. This is easily 1er Cru quality as are all Chavy Chouet Lieux-Dits and the price has kept up to commensurate to the quality. This is a great deal with his sick vineyards and insane talent and endless need to improve and refine his wines. This is one of those awesome lieu dits that consistently perform like way more expensive 1er Crus. Think Tessons or Meix Chaveaux from Roulot. Remember back in 2001 those were $40 wines. What are they today? The name Les Casse Tetes means broken-head or brain-teaser and refers to the extremely difficult very rocky soil that is next to impossible to work. It's really like a baby Perrieres. It is very thin soil and is on a cliff overlooking old rock quarries. What results are wines of uncommon mineral depth. What a wine. Gotta be the most underrated estate for high quality white Burg from top sites in all of Cote de Beaune.

Gorgeous nose. Lemon oil. Lemon pithstunning spice and deep penetrating minerality. Hint of green Apple and tons of wet earth. Just a slamming nose. New nuances approach every 10 minutes. Gorgeously defined minerality that is so lithe and detailed. Salty. SalineSmoke, nuts, butter. It's so Meursault. Meursault is so distinctive. Beguiling and dizzying.

Palate is so refined, fresh and sleek. So nimble, mineral and racy. Amazing palate presence and near perfect focus. Ripe and so juicy but with a very serious and very intense mineral attack and then lemon and lime gumdrops. Serious spine and structure here and a lovely sweetness (from the site and its more of a mineral sweetnees) you don't get in many white burgs. Perfect balance and jaw dropping purity. Infinite finesse. So focused and lean yet this is like a laser on the palate. Amazing texture and a sense of tactile mineralic sweetnessAwesome mid palate and stunning dissipating finish. Awesome inner mouth aromas and super salty finish. Lingers and lingers. A masterpiece. What a genius. Great acids. So fresh and so pure. It has length to burn and is ultra compact and has no noticeable oak. Romaric has really dialed back the oak and its imperceptible in this wine.

"The 2020 Meursault Les Casses-Têtes has a more mineral-driven bouquet compared to the Narvaux, slightly more delineation perhaps. The palate is very well balanced with a saline entry, quite citric with a sharp tensile finish that delivers the sapidity to urge you back for another sip. Excellent."- 93 Points.
