Started off with the 2005 Kunstler Hocheimer Kirchenstuck Erstes Gewachs and this was a stunner. I have definetly come to the conclusion that 2005 is an absolutely spectacular vintage for the GG and EG category with almost every one of them blowing me away. Tonight was no different. Explosive aromas of apricot, verbena, chamomile, white flowers, incense, sweet paprika, tangerine and some slate. Amazingy complex nose that grew throughout the night. Palate was soft as a pillow with beautiful purity and delineation. The acid is great but not imposing. It is perfectly integrated. The harmony was jaw-dropping. The fruit had a dried quality yet still had amazing freshness which is I guess what these styles of wine are trying to attain. Painfully elegant and long. This is an amazing wine and quite a value. I believe the only place that you can get it is my old store, Crush. By the way the picture is of Gunter Kunstler. A brilliant and intense winemaker.
Then moved onto the 2005 Huet Vouvray Le Mont Demi-Sec. This was very good and easily the best stuff made at this legendary estate since the brilliant 2002's. But my big problem with the wine was the acid was not there for me. It seemed a touch formless and gave off a little heat on the finish. The nose was great. Tons of wet earth, copper, spice, almonds, damp hay and some apple fruit. Kept expanding throughout the night. It was pure on the palate and creamy but this really needed more acidity. If that extra acid kick was there this would be close to the 2002.....but my conclusion is that it is a couple notches down.
Finally there was the 1988 Roagna Barbaresco (Vino da Tavola) Crichet Paje which was a dissapointment. There was a secondary fermentation or something which made the wine slightly spritzy and it really never went away. Chunky style too. Nice nose but not my scene.
