This is such a great vintage and the character of all the appelations really comes through in the wines. This could be called "transparent" which sometimes means less fruit but these have the fruit of great vintages like '90 and '02 AND the wonderful "transparency" of '01, '99 and '96. This vintage, like 2000 in Bordeaux, are becoming my benchmark vintages for these regions. What sets '05 in Burgundy apart has to be the character of the vintage. The wines are just so appealing on so many different levels.
This wine took around ten minutes to shake off any bottle shock it had and started to develop into a beautiful wine. The nose; vibrant, delicate and extremely layered with a potpourri of spices, red fruits, tea and balsam. The palate had vibrant high-tones red fruits along with wonderful lift from the cleansing clean acidity. This wine was very very clean. The freshness was uncanny. Obviously young but the length of the finish and the purity of the fruit was remarkable. The finish almost dissolved and never really left. Granted this wine has only been open for 45 minutes I know it has much more to say. The tannins are evident but right now the structure is buried under the fruit and acidity. This will go for a very long time. 30-40 years easy. I don't want to increase prices anymore than they are but this vintage is so complete and the range of great wines from Bourgogne Passetougrains all the way to RC is remarkable and most importantly they are so true to their terroir.
