Just a few words on the great German tasting yesterday

Went to some German tasting yesterday and tasted through many 2006's and many superstar 2005's. To be brief the best lineup was easily the Schloss Schonborn 2005's. Tasted through a range of '05's including an Marcobrunn Erstes Gewachs 2005 that was nothing short of astounding. Great length, texture and purity while truly showing how grand the old boys of the Rheingau truly are. They also had a 2005 Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg Auslese *** that blew my socks off. Dense, ripe, pure with laser-like acidity. Cannot think of a better 2005 Auslese from the Rheingau. Stunning juice.

A special mention also has to go out to the 2005 Schloss Reinhartshausen Marcobrunn Erstes Gewachs which was stunningly elegant, long and pure. Too bad there are only around 300 cases. More to come..but just wanted to say the "dinosaurs" of the Rheingau are back in effect. Big time.
