A big shout out to the G-Men

I must say as I look at this post I can see my hopefullnes as the new football season approached. Well for a change this year, my team The G-Men, are still in it and playing very well. Their "loss-victory" over the Patriots really boosted their confidence and they are riding that. The defense is looking vicious and Eli is playing bitbetter-than-well-enough-not-to-lose. I don't see Green Bay as the serious threat the media makes them out to be. Lambeau . . .big scary Lambeau. That is blown out of proportion. The defense needs to stand tough and Eli needs top-notch pass protection (which he has been getting, mostly)...especially if the weather is bad. That would be great if the Giants can pull this off. It would be unexpected and great for Eli Manning. for him and in the minds and hearts of New Yorkers. That love/hate relationship we have with him would end, if he brought home a Super Bowl trophy. Oh yeah, though . . .there is New England. But that is why they play the games. Nothing like the NFL playfoffs.

  1. Long time reader, second time commenter, third generation Packers fan checking in. Agree that Lambeau is nice for the talking heads to talk about, but not really a factor. It is a beautiful stadium though.

IMO the biggest challenge is going to be working against Green Bay's secondary. Al Harris and Charles Woodson can take anyone man to man, their physical play also wreaks havoc with any kind of timing patterns, and if Atari Bigby is bringing it like he has the last couple of games (see http://tinyurl.com/2o5znr for one of about 4 big hits from Saturday's game), the Giants are going to have a tough time getting a passing game going. This is the best Packers defense I've seen in a long time.

The best hope for the Giants (as it always is for anyone) is that Favre has one of his crazy-ass poor-decision-making games. He's about due for one, but this year seems different than the last three or four somehow. But you never know.

My guess - defensive struggle for a while, and someone will adjust and overcome. I'm slightly (say 60/40) in favor of that turning out to be the Packers, but, as you say, it's the playoffs, and that's what makes it fun.

Barring grave injury to a half dozen key Patriots, neither team stands a chance in the Superbowl though.

  3. Cliff,

    Well said.

    So impressive.

Eli showed great poise and Plaxico showed he is a superstar. Lots of greta defense and many dumb penalties on both sides though. I was on the edge of my seat.

  4. Well-played by Plaxico for sure. He made Al Harris look like a 4th stringer. Eli was solid and once Favre threw that int in the third, he lost his accuracy. Don't know whether it was the cold, or what, but it was only going to be a matter of time for the Giants, or an incredible stroke of luck for the Packers. A fun game to watch from the comfort of one's home.

Good luck in the Supergame (as some idiot hawking flat panels on one of the shopping channels referred to it as I flipped through the channels right after the game).
