I tasted with the great Florent Garaudet in March on a rainy, cold, late winter day in Monthelie. Everyone I asked (and I asked the top winemakers) had heard of him. The wines floored me. Florent has his stuff together and it is reflected in the wines. His whites wines are like a cross between Coche-Dury and Didier Dagenau and are insanely delicious. They are forces of nature like Florent. The wines are so special that I want, no make that need, to sell them in a special order. Like a slow build as they say.
I don't know how Florent makes his whites so decadently awesome with perfect minerality, precision and balance, yet he does. His 2012 whites as a group are just so special. The 2012 Florent Garaudet Meursalt which can be had for as little as $38.99 on the 4-pack. This Wine is so classic yet in the Garaudet style which I want to call decadent restraint - it is absolutely voluminous on the palate. The nose is incredibly aromatic and nuts, iodine and lovely minerality scream into your nostrils as you sniff it. It has an intense mineral streak which I get out of a lot of great Meursault. This is from 50 year old vines and the sappiness and density from the old vines really shines through. Amazingly complex already with ample volume in the mouth and wonderful elegance. This is really really good estate bottled Meursault for $39 a bottle. Where else can you find this but Fass Selections??!?!!? The finish stains the palate and begs you for another sip. Wonderful stuff. Now how about this wine's little brother?
The 2012 Florent Garaudet Bourgogne Blanc can be had for as little as $19.99 a 4-pack. This wine is a major, major value and I cannot emphasize this enough. It is in the words of Florent Garaudet "a Meursault in reality" as it comes from land pretty much in Meursault but not classified as Meursault. It can be kept for 6 years, maybe more and has serious structure for a Bourgogne Blanc. Ripe and round with nice fruit and mineral overtones. Great acidity that snaps this into focus. Really really special Bourgogne Blanc. It's a big monster but like an overgrown puppy more than like Shrek, it that makes any sense.
Little update on wine arriving. Our first Fall shipment (there are 2) is due to hit Oakland in mid September and then will be received by Amedeo, our warehouse in Napa (who are fine from the earthquake by the way) shortly after and then things will be shipped according to the weather of your particular region.
These will be shipped in the November shipment.
