There are two types of Fass Selections Riesling customers. One who believes in the God
of Battenfeld-Spanier and one who believes in the God of Andreas Laible. They are both terrific customers but also very devout to their respective beliefs. Today I want the Battenfeld fans to open up to the possibility that maybe, there might be another God who can coexist with their God. That God is Andreas Laible. I have never brought up religion in a Fass Selections e-mail, but the fervent, almost religious fervor of each side is something I did not expect. I am thrilled to the gills that each of these killer wineries has a rabid fan base, but I also want both of these Gods to live in harmony, side by side in the same cellar. Kumbaya.
I think the 2014 Andreas Laible Klingelberger for as little as $29.99 is a game-changer that will convert many many people (this would be $45-$50 at regular retail). The 2014 Klingelberger is one of the best dry Rieslings you will ever have. It epitomizes the Laible style which is all about balance, elegance and minerality. The wine shimmers across the palate, filling it with floral aromas and leaving a gorgeous finish, almost like a dream. It evolves over the course of an evening, making it fascinating to drink. When I have people in the wine business over to my home, I open Laible.

This wine is so floral that flowers in California want to change their names to Laible. This wine is so balanced that politicians everywhere are trying to get an allocation so their budgets can be balanced. This wine is so deep that Malcolm Gladwell wishes he could be it. This wine will age for so long that residents of Okinawa are trying to get allocations to go with their sweet potatoes. This wine is such a great value that Ralph Nader might run again in 2016 on a Laible platform. Anyway, you get the point. And no, none of this is hyberbole. The wine is that good.
As many of you know, we only get this allocation (which is sold to their best customers) because the winemaker loved our first writeup.
This is, for me, their best wine. Better than their tiny production GG. It is stunning in 2014.
Laible is near and dear to my heart as it is almost the too perfect winery. Run by Andreas and Petra Laible, some of the nicest people in a country of over the top generous winemakers, Laible is located in Ortenau, the coolest part of Baden, and has some of the steeper vineyards I have seen down there. The Durbacher Plauerlain which surrounds Laible's tiny estate, has slate-like soil and is impeccably manicured.
The wines are clean, incredibly vivid and deep, ageable and structured, so detailed that you cannot believe they are priced the way they are. It's all about the direct to consumer pricing that makes this even more special than it is. The 2014 Klingelberger outshines GG's at 2-3 times the price. It has so much finesse and breeding that it is almost hard to believe. The balance is so good, balancing all that material with a delicate touch that only the finest, most chiseled German Rieslings have. 2014 is more in tune with 2013 than the 2012, in that it is a higher acid vintage.
