If You've Had Macle - You Know. If You Haven't, You Need to Try It. The Wine Every Wine Lover Needs in the Cellar
If you ask me, I can go through categories of wine: New World
Chardonnay, Burgundian Pinot... And most people have heard of most of
them. I can certainly say that
the "sous voile" style wines of the Jura are their own category and to a certain extent stand alone in terms of distinctiveness. And Macle is really the winemaker most associated with this style.
I'm really excited for everyone to try the Domaine Macle Cotes de Jura 2010 for $34.99 on a 3-pack. Everyone remembers the first time they try Macle. It has really stunning acidity and balance and the oxidative overtones add an additional layer of complexity. It's really a cascade of flavors on the palate unlike any other wine. The 2010 is that good that I had to sell it. Incredible concentration and purity
along with that trademark Macle freshness and elegant minerality. The
acid structure is quite compelling in 2010 and any Riesling lover will
appreciate the incredible backbone this wine has. Super long finish and very fresh. This is going to age for a very very long time. Easily 30+ years.
We
at Fass Selections have never sold a Jura wine before. That is until
today. I have very particular tastes for people who know me and only
want to sell wine I am behind. The Jura is a complex region and through
it's varying degrees of popularity over the years I have mainly watched
from the sidelines. But, what I look for in the Jura, is what I look for
everywhere else. I want to sell the most classic/old school producer I
can at a fair price. One that can uphold and represent a region.
When
one thinks of Cotes de Jura Blanc in the traditional/oxidative style,
one thinks of Domaine Macle. For me it is my favorite of these Jura
wines in the oxidative style. Macle is the most famous for their Chateau
Chalon, and indeed it is epic, but sometime their Cote de Jura can be
the better wine, maybe lacking the depth of the Chateau Chalon, but it
makes up for it in accessibility and lack of austerity. It is 85%
Chardonnay and 15% Savagnin and fermented with wild yeasts in
enamel-lined tanks and then moved to casks age under the voile.
Disclaimer:
This wine are in the "sous voile" style which means there is an
semi-oxidative tang/element to this wine. Kind of like a sherry or not.
It is a long standing tradition in the Jura to make these wines and when
executed by a master like Macle the juxtaposition of the wild Jura
flavors, delicate finesse driven mineral character, super 2010 acid
structure, they must be sold, offerered, discussed and debated for many
years. This is a perfect wine to bring to a tasting. It's traditionally
been hard to source in the States so even serious collectors appreciate
trying a bottle.
There
is a growing number of younger producers who are making whites in the
"ouille" style, which has no oxidative character. Even Laurent Macle is
experimenting with one, but his father, Jean does not approve.
Remember
this is a small estate of only 12 hectares, and they have huge
international demand, so act fast on, what is one of the best vintages
of this wine. I had to get some over here.
WE NOW SHIP TO MASSACHUSETTS!
In February, Amedeo will ship to Massachusetts. We are thrilled about this.
Office Hours
I
love drinking and selecting wines - but my passion for teaching people
about wine is almost as big. I'm happy to announce a block of time each
day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These
blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to
talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age
wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal
is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at
917-912-4355 from 4-7 EST Monday - Friday.
