heard of them before as the wines were absolutely stunning. They remind me of Fourrier. Yes. Fourrier. They are utterly classic Gevrey Chambertins with fantastically brilliant site character, utmost finesse without sacrificing power, sappy vivid fruit that is very on the red side and incredible depth. They use wood so brilliantly it kept compelling me to ask young Gilles Duroche if there was any wood on the wine at all, despite tasting out of barrels in the cellar. This is a rising star domaine if I have ever tasted one. Young Gilles Duroche started with the Domaine full time in 2005 and has really left his mark as the wines get better every year with 2013 being arguably the best that Duroche has made yet. I am offering the 2013's here because the wines are so popular in France that he is already sold out of his 2012's and he has very few 13's and these will be extremely limited. I am lucky to get these. This is a blue-chip Domaine on the level of Jean-Marie Fourrier, yet not priced like Fourrier. Fourrier has taken quite a price hike in the last 3-4 years, and yes the wines are fantastic, but become less fantastic when price is factored in. Duroche is brilliant and priced like normal Burgundy was 5-8 years ago.
I am proud, humbled and just plain giddy to be able to offer such a high-quality wine as the 2013 Domaine Duroche Gevrey-Chambertin for as little as $39.99 on the 3-pack. For a village Gevrey of this quality, especially in this high-class, elegant, transparent style $40 is a ridiculous. This would surely be $60-70 in the 3-tier system. My notes for this wine say fresh as a field of flowers on a spring day with uncommon depth. Terrific purity and sap that glides across the palate with an underlying meatiness. So fresh. I kept saying that over and over. Terrific mineral spine with impressive focus and volume on the palate. Sensational inner mouth aromas. Performs way way above its AOC. This is 1er Cru in quality. This is limited.
I also have a terrific 1er Cru from young Gilles Duroche. One of my favorites but I never have seen it perform to the price it usually commands. Today I am thrilled to offer the 2013 Gilles Duroche Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Lavaux St. Jacques" for as little as $68.99 on a 3-pack. I think I can say this is the best Lavaux I have ever tasted. Really performs a level above Rousseau and Jadot yet is priced at $68.99. The 2011 Jadot can be found for between $80 and $120 a bottle and the 2011 Rousseau can be had for between $350 and $370. Um.....Duroche ALL DAY over both of those. Not even a debate. Here is my note. Super expressive nose with dazzling purity. The intensity on the palate is remarkable. Very sweet fruit. Even with all the intensity there is an easy drinking quality to this wine at this stage (barrel sample) in its evolution. The persistence is remarkable on the palate. It never ends. A dazzling and complete example of Lavaux St. Jacques that should drink well for the next 20+ years. I have a very limited amount of this is well.
The Domaine is a little over 8 hectares and includes 4 Grand Crus and 3 1er Cru's all in Gevrey. As a matter of fact they only make Gevrey. So Gilles knows Gevrey as Bo knows football. Over 5 generations this estate has been in the Duroche family and young Gilles seems poised to take it to new heights. They farm in the "lutte raisonee" style which is utmost care for the land and if they need to spray they will as they are running a business and grapes have to be harvested. They hand harvest the grapes and 100% de-stem. The wines today see not much new oak. 15-20% the Gevrey AC sees and the Lavaux sees 30% new oak but you could never tell as Gilles is a master of oak. The elegance married with power is just incredible here and for the quality I am giving these away today.
2013 Domaine Duroche Gevrey-Chambertin - $42.99 ($119.97 3-pack) (LIMITED)2013 Domaine Duroche Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Lavaux St. Jacques" - $73.99 ($206.97 3-pack) (VERY LIMITED)
Are any of the Duroche still available? I know it's doubtful but I thought worth asking.
