The Return of Our Most Popular Red Burgundy Producer

"The quality is also very fine up and down the appellation hierarchy as a look at the various Burghound Selections will confirm. Among the regional wines    I was particularly impressed by the Bourgogne-Hautes Côtes de Nuits  though there are many fine examples of straight Bourgogne as well. Otherwise there are excellent villages, 1ers and grands crus up and down the Côte de Nuits and while there is definite separation between one level and another, no one particular level stands out." - Allen Meadows on 2014 Cote de Nuits wines.

The Burghound has spoken!

The word on 2014 Red Burgundies is in and Allen Meadows, aka the Burghound, saysthat the 2014's in the Cote de Nuits are a consistent vintage and more uniform than 2013 but also have the trappings to be one of my favorite types of vintages, which is the vintage that will be accessible and has the ability to age. Meadows was continually impressed by how uniform the vintage was and if was forced to pick out an area that was the strongest in the Cote de Nuits he said it was the Hautes Cotes.

When I read that my heart melted and I knew I was not crazy as some of the best young wines I This is the fourth vintage (2014) of the 2014 Herve Murat HCDN "Les Herbues" is a terrific wine and at $24.99 a bottle on a 4-pack remains one of the great values that we offer. This would be $35 via the 3 tier system and even at price it is a crazy value. But at $25 it crushes 2014 so nicely. It has beautiful aromas of spice, clove, dusty earth and some mashed flowers along with deep red cherries. So many cherries and so vivid. There is also a cooling, crunchy cluster of minerals under all that fruit, spice and earth. The palate is all black cherry, blackberries and dark raspberry fruits. Just an amalgamation of fruit. Not as concentrated as the 12, but it is beautiful in a more serene and balanced way. The balance is what stands out immediately on the palate and not a tannin out of place. Really silky but there is also a serious sense of structure and as it develops it will gain more depth and structure. Such sap and such poise for this level. Do not miss this as 2014 is behind 2012 in the Murat vintage quality hierarchy.
tasted last March were the 2014 Hautes Cotes de Nuits wines from the great Hervé Murat. It is unreal how well this humble appellation excelled in 2014. It is a wild hilly appellation and Hervé's vines are around 20 minutes from Nuits St. Georges in the small Hamlet of Concouerr, which is, even after visiting Hervé 4 times is still a pain to try and find. His HCDN (Hautes Cotes de Nuits) wines are his signature bottlings and as we have referenced before he is the King of Hautes Cotes de Nuits and his introductory bottling, the HCDN "Les Herbues," is consistently the best entry level Burgundy wine I have tasted and the best that we sell. It tastes more like a 1er or Grand Cru wine.  HCDN is the level above entry level Cru Bourgogne and below village wines and Good HCDN goes for $35 or so - good Cru Bourgogne goes for $25-$35).  This wine just has the depth and density that you usually only see in a 1er cru or a great village wine  I have no idea how Herve did it, to be honest.  Frankly, I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Up next I have Herve's best wine, the 2014 Herve Murat Morey St. Denis 1er Cru "Les Charrieres" for as little as $59.99 a 3-pack. The price at the estate went up a little so I took a lower margin to keep this wine under $60, which will probably be the last vintage to stay under $60, so grab this while you can before it becomes $70!!  I have many seasoned Burgundy palates who drink very expensive and fancy 1er and Grand Cru wines on the regular and they all get their minds blown by this bottling. This is one of the best red wines I sell every year and drinks like a 1er Cru or Grand Cru from a much fancier producer. The wine has that extra makes it a wine to meditate over as it is so graceful and dazzlingly complex.  Classic Murat purity and freshness for days in this wine and with the typical high-toned yet darker fruit than normally is associated with Les Charrieres. The nose is big, dense and ripe.  The acidity is wonderfully refreshing and provides a nice contrast to the big fruit and velvety tannins. The finish is absolutely epic - this is why you buy great Burgundy and it is a wine that you will want in your cellar.  A juicy, dense wine and the best Charrieres yet and comparable to the epic 2012. This wine is a masterpiece and one of the best values in one of the sexiest Cotes de Nuits villages.  The vineyards are old vines, right next to Clos des Ormes with very low yields.

Premier Cru Morey starts at $65 and negociant wines, like Drouhin, are $90.  The better producers run from $110 - $200 so to get wine from a star like Herve Murat at under $60  - well, let's just say that Christmas came early this year.  I bought this direct from Herve, and cut out 2 tiers so I can offer this at a great price.
