Aligote is seen as the third wheel in Burgundy yet almost every great producer makes one. Ramonet, Leroy, Roulout, Arnaud Ente, Aubert de Villaine and countless others. You should ask yourself a question: if all of these great winemakers are making wine from Aligote even though it is relatively inexpensive, what do they know that you don't? What they know is that this grape, in the right hands
can make wines of utter magic, brilliance, drinkability, ageability and complexity. They kicked Melon out but kept Aligote in for a reason. It kicks ass, takes names and makes profound wines.
We all know by now that Chavy Chouet makes killer Chardonnay from his not so humbleBourgogne Blanc to the supernal heights of his lieu dits and 1er Cru's in the best sites in Meursault and Puligny, but Romaric also has the touch with Aligote. The 2018 Chavy Chouet Aligoté Les Petits Poirers can be had today for $19.99 on a 4-pack and $17.99 on a case and that is with tariffs. An unreal wine and an unreal holiday week deal. This is sources from the plains of Puligny Montrachet from vines that are 70+ years old. So basically Aligote in Puligny. It's got a gorgeous nose. Hint of light sweet oak that will integrate with 6 months to 2 years of age. Gorgeous, apple, baking spices, hint of iodine, man this smells like Puligny, the terroir is so good it cannot be contained. Some florals as well some just ripe vineyard peach and clean and pure minerality. It's really batting way above its average. It's like the Brady Anderson 50 home run seson minus the steroids.
The palate is teeming with energy, vibrancy and freshness. Saline and mineral and has an overall refreshing quality which is one of the principal characteristics of any good Aligote. It's really fruity as well and has terrific salinity to balance it all out. Noting like salty Puligny fruit. Inner mouth aromas are there with florals, smoke and hickory. Fresh, vibrant and wonderful texture that is some parts ripeness and other parts concentrated minerality. Finish is wonderfully persistent and outrageously refreshing.
2018 Chavy-Chouet Aligote "Les Petits Poires" - $21.99 ($79.96 4-Pack, $215.88 12 bottle case {$17.99}) (*Including Tariff of $1.41)
