Hanspeter Ziereisen - the Da Vinci of Winemakers

Germany is not known for Syrah.  Most of Germany is much farther north than Syrah's most famous growing area (the Rhone).  But Hanspeter Ziereisen is at the very southern tip of Germany, he has the terroir to grow great Syrah and he is, I can say without any hesitation, one of the great winemakers in the world. Hanspeter is making world class wine from 6 grapes: Pinot Noir, Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder, Chardonnay, Chasselas (aka Gutedel in Baden) and today's grape, Syrah.

I'd put these against the Northern Rhone Syrahs I've sold at both price levels today. And these are by far the most Northern Rhone like Syrahs I've had from ANYWHERE that is not the Northern Rhone.  They have the aromatics and flavors of Northern Rhone Syrah but the wines are really more about balance and tension between fruit, richness acidity and secondary flavors, almost more the way a Burgundian would make Syrah.

I'm offering special three pack pricing as I really want you to experience both of these wines.

Up first is one of the greatest Syrah values I've ever sold at Fass Selections. Period. It is the 2013 Ziereisen Syrah "Gestad" for as little as $27.99 a bottle on the 3-pack. This wine is a wine I want as many people as possible to have as their first German Syrah.  I've priced it to be affordable for all and it is just delicious. Refined and sleek with an uncanny freshness and depth. This wine is dark, meaty, ripe and so soft and juicy on the palate and with lovely blackberry fruit and wonderfully etched and fine tannins.  If you've ever had any Ziereisen wine you know what I'm talking about. It's that balance and tension between opulence/richness reigned in with freshness. Why the wines are so delicious and drinkable.  The acids are beautiful and extend the brilliant mouthfeel. It is only 11.8 %. Sickness. Brilliance. genius. Stephane Rheinhardt of the Wine Advocate (who knows his stuff) gave the 2012 91 pts and this is a better wine. Startling value here. Here is part of his 2012 review that I think really tells the story of why this wine is special. This is a truth bomb.

"The finish is refreshing and grippy, and rarely have I tasted a 12% alcohol red with such an intensity and aromatic finesse. This is an excellent Syrah that truly rivals the Pinots of this family domaine."  Stephane Rheinhardt, Wine Advocate

Up next is Hanspeter's ode to Hermitage. Think elegant Hermitage when you stick your nose in the glass of the 2014 Ziereisen Syrah "Jaspis," for as little as $49.99 a bottle on a 3-pack. This is the finest Syrah released in Germany every year and the 2013 did get 93 pts from Stephane Rheinhardt of the Wine Advocate. This wine blew my mind. There is no other way to describe it. It comes from jurassic chalk soils and then was aged in 50% new and 50% used barriques for 20 months, before it was bottled without fining and filtration. The vines are only 16 years old. That is ridiculous. Huge floral nose and I mean really really floral. What a mouthfeel with complexity and stunning freshness with amazing acidity and length. Super gamey and meaty with such depth and poise. So floral on the palate and so juicy with those super fine super elegant and super precise Jaspis like tannins. A wine to age while you drink the Gestad. They only make 600 bottles so as expected this is VERY limited.

2013 Ziereisen Syrah "Gestad" - $29.99 ($83.97 3-pack) (LIMITED)

2014 Zieresien Syrah "Jaspis" - $52.99 ($149.97 3-pack)
 (UBER-LIMITED)
