My Trip to Germany redux: Pt XV- Pfalz at Von Buhl

This was an awesome visit as the wines were very good but the town of Deidesheim was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to in my life and many pics will litter this particular piece and I might even just do a post on how beautiful Deidesheim is. So old school. Like 1500's old school. Waking up early and catching the sunrise in the vineyards over the town of Deidesheim was truly unforgettable. Before sunrise as it was getting light out weaving in and out of narrow streets, hearing the church bells ring. Like Bergman in Germany. Just incredible. On to the wines. We spent a good amount of time here and had a wonderful cellar tour, BBQ and vineyard your. Trulty the whole nine yards.

Started with four sparklers in their courtyard which was a nice change of pace.

2002 Weissburgunder Sekt b.A. "zero dosage" - This had fine tiny bubbles along with a nice creamy elegant mouthfeel with a persistent flavor of watermelon. Nice stuff. Wish more German bubbles were brought in. Lots of interesting stuff over there.

2003 Riesling Sekt b.A. Brut - Very Rieslingesque if that makes any sense. Lots of apricot, peaches and minerals on the nose with a nice commplex creamy mouthfeel. Shows the character of the vintage but still retains some acidity.

2001 Forster Pechstein Riesling Brut - Aromas reminded me of Champagne. The palate also reminded me of Champagne. Beautiful complex palate full of ripe juicy fruit. Tremendous depth and layering. Very clean and pure. The acid spice makes me believe this will be long-lived.

2001 Pinot Sekt b.A. Brut - This was ok but definetly the weakest of the four sparlklers. Nice blue fruits on the nose with great purity but seems a bit simple. Blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Now onto some red wines out of barrel and botte from their cellar.

2005 Spatburgunder Trocken - Nose of wet earth with a palate of ripe and rich plums. Nicely expressive and easy to drink. Seems like 2005 is a great vintage for German red wines.

2005 Spatburgunder Spatlese Trocken - Nice nose of spice, earth, fern and mineral. Very juicy with ripe tannins. Nice length.

Then we moved onto the vineyards to taste some dry wines. Nice tasting these wines in the vineyards they actually come from.

2005 Spatlese Dry - Really does not smell dry but definetly tastes dry. Nice concentration, great purity ad beautiful pinpoint precision. Fruit is tinged with white and black pepper and the lasting flavor is starfruit.

2005 Reiterpfad Ruppertsberg GG - This was the first in a trio of killer Grosses Gewaches. Great powdery nose with some intense mineral and light berry fruit. Pungent nose that was so pure. Great concentration and richness along a powerful frame with loads of peach-skin fruit and a dried honeyed quality. Long finish. Very very impressive.

2005 Ungenhauer Forst GG - Another nose of berry powder, some minerals and an exotic hint of ginger. Fantasic palate of dense apricot fruit, chalky minerality and juicy acidity. Nice wine but trails the previous GG and the next one.

2005 Kirchenstuck Forst GG - Rudi thinks this is the best vineyard in the Pfalz. I do not have enough experience to comment but this was pretty darn amazing. Just a wow wine! Pungent ripe nose of orange blossom, tangerine and minerals. Wispy yet deep. Palate is a citrus explosion with juicy acids and long finish. Easily has the mose breed and class of the three. Would love to have these in my cellar but not avaible stateside.

2004 Armand Kabinett - Lovely fruit here on a ripe and juicy frame with good sweetness and nice concentration. This bottling is always a great value.

2005 Forster Jesuitgarten Spatlese - Nice ripe nose of mirabelle plum, apricot, and other flowery fruit. Long finish, velvety texture and wonderful balance. Very nice.

2005 Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad Schuerebe Spatlese - Maybe the best Schue I tasted in 2005. Salty nose with some lavender, botrytis and floral notes. Concentrated yet flowery and light. Like a cloud on the palate. Awesome and maybe the wine of the day here.
